Odor Sensing in Natural Environment Using Quartz Crystal Resonators: Application to Aroma Sensing of Roses Cultivated in an Outside Garden

چکیده
Abstract In order to detect phytoncide or aroma in a natural environment using an odor sensor of quartz crystal resonator (QCR), the authors investigated the most suitable drying agent to eliminate moisture influences. The odor sensor used is a system of QCRs coated with organic sensory films. It was experimentally found that calcium chloride is the most suitable desiccant for odor sensing to eliminate moisture influences and for use in the natural environment. We then measured 6 kinds of roses; Love (red), Star light (yellow), White Christmas (white), Snow white (white), Catherine Deneuve (pinky orange), and First love (pink), to detect the aroma of these naturally cultivated roses in an outside garden. We have successfully detected the aroma of roses by eliminating moisture influences on the odor sensor by using a calcium chloride desiccant tube. It was found that White Christmas, Star light, and Catherine Deneuve indicate a similar pattern and Snow white, First love, and Love indicate another similar pattern. It was concluded that the odor similarity is not corresponding to the color of roses.

Real-time sensing of roses' aroma using an odor sensor of quartz crystal resonaotors
In order to detect plant aroma in a natural environment, we have investigated roses’ aroma using an odor sensor of quartz crystal resonator (QCR). In present work, we describe experimental setup for real-time sensing of roses’ aroma and feature extraction of roses’ aroma sensed by QCR sensors. This method can distinguish as different aroma as human sense of smell judged for two kinds of roses. ...
متن کاملTwo-curve-shaped biosensor using photonic crystal nano-ring resonators
We design a novel nano-ring resonator using two-dimensional photonic crystal (2D-PhC), for bio-sensing applications. The structure of biosensor is created by two-curve-shaped ring resonator which sandwiched by two waveguides. These are configured by removing one row of air holes. The refractive index of sensing hole is changed by binding an analyte. Hence, intensity of the transmission spectrum...
متن کاملApplication of Remote Sensing in Assessing Land Use Changes in Haraz Watershed
Aims: Land-use change due to human activities is one of the important issues in regional and development planning. The aim of this study was to detect land-use changes using Landsat TM, ETM+, IRS and ASTER satellite imagery. Methodology: In this quasi-experimental study, land-use changes in the Haraz watershed over a 23-year period were evaluated. For this study, images of 1992 TM, ETM + 2002, ...
متن کاملDesign and Validation of a 150 MHz HFFQCM Sensor for Bio-Sensing Applications
Acoustic wave resonators have become suitable devices for a broad range of sensing applications due to their sensitivity, low cost, and integration capability, which are all factors that meet the requirements for the resonators to be used as sensing elements for portable point of care (PoC) platforms. In this work, the design, characterization, and validation of a 150 MHz high fundamental frequ...
متن کاملFeasibility study on ecotourism potential areas using remote sensing and geographic information system (case study: abbasabad forest area, veresk, iran)
Ecotourism as the most attractive subset of the tourism industry can contribute to natural resource conservation and local development. Although great numbers of people annually visit Abbasabad area, in Veresk, Mazandaran, to enjoy its brilliant landscape and moderate ecologic condition, there is no applicable plan for many natural attractive zones in this area. As a result, some specific well ...
